Meptid

Meptid (meptazinol hydrochloride) is a small molecule opioid analgesic developed and marketed by biosyn Arzneimittel. It is classified as a WHO Step II opioid and is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, including its long-standing use in obstetrics for labor pain management. Meptazinol acts as a mixed agonist-antagonist at opioid receptors, with a degree of selectivity for the mu-1 subtype. A key clinical advantage of Meptid is its favorable safety profile; it is associated with less respiratory depression in newborns compared to other opioids like pethidine. In Germany, the drug is available as a 100 mg injection solution for intramuscular or intravenous administration and does not require a narcotic prescription (BTM-frei).
