Mequitazine

Mequitazine is a pharmaceutical drug belonging to the phenothiazine chemical class. It functions as a potent, long-acting histamine H1 receptor antagonist with anticholinergic properties. Its primary use is in the treatment of various allergic conditions, including hay fever, urticaria (hives), allergic rhinitis, pruritus, allergic dermatoses, and allergic conjunctivitis. Mequitazine exerts its therapeutic effects by competitively inhibiting the binding of histamine to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the cascade of events that lead to allergic symptoms such as itching, swelling, and redness. While classified by some as a first-generation antihistamine, it is also noted for having reduced sedative properties compared to other first-generation agents. Mequitazine was patented in 1969 and introduced into medical use in 1976.
