MER-103

MER-103 is a novel oral formulation of the bisphosphonate alendronate sodium, developed by Merrion Pharmaceuticals for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The drug utilizes Merrion's proprietary GIPET (Gastrointestinal Permeation Enhancement Technology) platform, which incorporates absorption enhancers into an enteric-coated tablet to significantly improve the bioavailability of alendronate. Clinical studies demonstrated that a 6mg dose of MER-103 achieved approximately twelve times higher dose-adjusted absorption compared to the standard 35mg Fosamax formulation. Like other bisphosphonates, its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, specifically by targeting farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase.
