MER3101 is an investigational antigen-specific immunotherapy being developed for the prevention and treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. It consists of the insulin B-chain (IBC) autoantigen formulated with MAS-1, a nanoparticle, emulsion-based adjuvant. Developed using MERIT (MERcia immunotherapeutic) technology, the drug is designed to restore immune self-tolerance to pancreatic beta-cell antigens. Unlike traditional insulin therapies that directly lower blood glucose, MER3101 functions as a vaccine-like biologic that modulates the autoimmune response by promoting Th2 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) pathways. This shift in the immune profile is intended to protect remaining beta cells from autoimmune destruction. It is administered via intramuscular injection as an emulsion and has been studied in Phase 1 clinical trials sponsored by the University of Colorado Denver in collaboration with Mercia Pharma.
