Overview

Meradimate is a synthetic organic compound primarily used as an active ingredient in sunscreens and other sun-protection products. It is also known as menthyl anthranilate and functions as a UV filter, absorbing both UVA and UVB radiation to provide broad-spectrum protection against ultraviolet light. Meradimate is approved by the FDA for use in over-the-counter sunscreen products at concentrations up to 5%. Its mechanism of action involves absorbing UV radiation, particularly effective against UVA rays up to 336 nm, thereby helping prevent sunburn and skin damage caused by sun exposure. The compound’s structure—an ortho-disubstituted aminobenzoate ester derived from menthol and anthranilic acid—enables efficient electron delocalization for optimal absorption of harmful rays. Meradimate is considered gentle on the skin, making it suitable for sensitive individuals, but it does not provide complete coverage across all UVA wavelengths[1][2][4][5][6].
