Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meratrim (IHBG-10) is a proprietary nutraceutical combination consisting of extracts from the flower heads of *Sphaeranthus indicus* (East Indian globe thistle) and the fruit rind of *Garcinia mangostana* (Mangosteen), typically in a 3:1 ratio. Developed by InterHealth Nutraceuticals (now a part of Lonza), it is primarily used as a dietary supplement for weight management and the reduction of body fat. Meratrim exerts its effects by modulating the biological pathways involved in adipogenesis and lipolysis. Specifically, it has been shown to inhibit the differentiation of pre-adipocytes into mature fat cells and reduce lipid accumulation by downregulating key adipogenic transcription factors and proteins, such as PPAR-gamma and perilipin, while also increasing the expression of adiponectin. Beyond general weight loss, IHBG-10 was investigated in clinical trials for its potential to counteract weight gain associated with the use of atypical antipsychotic medications, although these specific applications were not advanced following pilot studies.
