Overview

Mercaptomethyl phosphonate is a small molecule organophosphonate compound featuring both a mercapto (thiol, –SH) and a phosphonate group. It has the molecular formula CH3O3PS and a molecular weight of approximately 126.07 g/mol[1][2][3]. This compound is primarily used as an experimental chemical probe in biochemical research rather than as an approved pharmaceutical drug. Notably, it acts as a competitive inhibitor of alkaline phosphatase enzymes, binding to the active site and interfering with enzyme activity[8]. Its inhibitory effect has been characterized structurally in complex with Escherichia coli alkaline phosphatase, where it binds with its phosphonate moiety directed toward solvent rather than coordinating directly to active site zinc ions[8]. There are no known clinical indications or therapeutic uses for this compound; it is not approved for medical use in any jurisdiction[1].
