Mercapton is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical cold kit developed by Medi-Radiopharma for renal cortical imaging. The kit contains dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as the active ligand. Upon reconstitution with sterile sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) solution, it forms the technetium (99mTc) succimer complex. Following intravenous injection, the tracer specifically accumulates in the renal cortex, primarily within the cells of the proximal convoluted tubules. This localization allows for high-resolution scintigraphic evaluation of renal morphology, detection of focal cortical abnormalities such as scarring or pyelonephritis, and assessment of relative renal function. It is widely used in pediatric and adult nuclear medicine for detailed kidney evaluation.
