Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Merfaith-TZ is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Marketed by Unifaith Biotech, this combination is designed to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria. Meropenem works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell death. Tazobactam acts as a suicide inhibitor of various beta-lactamases, including some extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), which prevents the enzymatic degradation of meropenem and extends its therapeutic efficacy against resistant strains.
