Overview

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum, intravenous carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a variety of serious bacterial infections in adults and children. It is effective against many Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria, including those producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases. Its primary mechanism of action is inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. It is resistant to most β-lactamase enzymes but may be hydrolyzed by metallo-beta-lactamases. Indications include complicated skin and skin structure infections, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis (including pediatric use), pneumonia (including nosocomial), septicemia, urinary tract infections, gynecological infections such as endometritis, and empiric treatment for febrile neutropenia[1][2][3][4][5][7][8]. Developed in the 1980s and approved for medical use in the US in 1996[7], it remains on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
