Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meropenem + sulbactam + edetic acid is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic therapy developed by Cosmas Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative pathogens. The combination consists of meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem; sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor; and edetic acid (EDTA), a chelating agent. Meropenem works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Sulbactam protects meropenem from degradation by Class A and some Class C/D beta-lactamases. The inclusion of EDTA is intended to address resistance mediated by metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs); EDTA chelates the divalent metal ions (such as zinc) that are essential cofactors for MBL activity, thereby restoring the susceptibility of MBL-producing bacteria to meropenem. This triple combination is administered parenterally.
