Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Meropenem + xeruborbactam** is an investigational, intravenously administered antibacterial combination consisting of the carbapenem antibiotic meropenem and xeruborbactam (formerly QPX7728), an ultra-broad-spectrum bicyclic boronate beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed by Qpex Biopharma (acquired by Shionogi), this combination is designed to treat serious Gram-negative bacterial infections, particularly those caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and carbapenem-resistant *Acinetobacter baumannii* (CRAB). Xeruborbactam potently inhibits serine and metallo-beta-lactamases (Ambler Classes A, B, C, and D), including KPC, NDM, VIM, IMP, and OXA-type enzymes, thereby protecting meropenem from enzymatic degradation and restoring its bactericidal activity. Additionally, xeruborbactam exhibits modest intrinsic antibacterial activity against Enterobacterales by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (primarily PBP3). The combination has completed Phase 1 clinical evaluation in healthy volunteers.
