Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mersacidin is a tetracyclic, 20-amino acid type B lantibiotic (lanthipeptide) originally isolated from *Bacillus* species (specifically *Bacillus* sp. strain HIL Y-85,54728). It exerts potent bactericidal activity against Gram-positive pathogens, including methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA). Unlike type A lantibiotics, which form pores in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, mersacidin acts by binding to the cell wall precursor lipid II, thereby inhibiting the transglycosylation step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis. This unique mechanism of action makes it highly effective against multidrug-resistant strains and prevents cross-resistance with glycopeptide antibiotics like vancomycin. Mersacidin has been investigated in preclinical models for the eradication of MRSA nasal colonization and the treatment of other Gram-positive infections.
