Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent that acts locally in the colon to inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. The MAX-002 formulation was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, controlled Phase 3 clinical trial comparing its efficacy and safety to placebo and Canasa (another mesalamine suppository) over six weeks.
