Overview
This combination therapy consists of the anti-inflammatory drug mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) and the prebiotic oligofructose-enriched inulin (OFI). Mesalazine is a standard maintenance and induction therapy for ulcerative colitis that acts locally on the colonic mucosa to inhibit inflammatory mediators, primarily through the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma). Oligofructose-enriched inulin is a prebiotic fiber blend that promotes the selective growth of beneficial saccharolytic bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria, which have low inflammatory potential. The combination is investigated for its potential synergistic effect in treating active ulcerative colitis by combining direct anti-inflammatory action with microbiome modulation to reduce fecal inflammatory markers like calprotectin.
