Overview

Mesalazine (also known as mesalamine or 5-aminosalicylic acid) is an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug primarily used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and maintain remission. It acts mainly topically in the colon by inhibiting prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, reducing leukocyte migration, and scavenging free radicals[6]. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversibly binding to the H+, K+-ATPase enzyme on gastric parietal cells[5]. The combination of mesalazine and pantoprazole has been studied for use in ulcerative colitis patients who excrete intact Asacol (a brand of mesalazine) tablets in their feces. Co-administration increases gastric pH, improving the release and absorption of mesalazine in the proximal gastrointestinal tract, thereby enhancing symptom management for these patients[1][3].
