Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mesavant is a high-dose, once-daily oral formulation of mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) specifically developed for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. It utilizes the proprietary Multi-Matrix System (MMX) technology, which features a pH-dependent gastro-resistant coating that delays the release of the active ingredient until the tablet reaches the terminal ileum, typically at a pH of 7.0 or higher. The core of the tablet contains mesalazine within a lipophilic and hydrophilic matrix, which ensures a slow and controlled release throughout the entire length of the colon. This localized delivery mechanism maximizes the anti-inflammatory effect on the colonic mucosa while minimizing systemic absorption. Mesalazine is thought to exert its therapeutic effects by modulating local chemical mediators of the inflammatory response, particularly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, and by acting as an agonist for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ).
