Overview

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-exosomes) are extracellular vesicles being investigated by the University of Ulm for their potential to treat hyperinflammation and immune dysfunction. These exosomes are harvested from mesenchymal stem cells and contain a complex cargo of proteins, lipids, and various RNA species that mediate paracrine signaling. In the context of the IMECOV19 study, these exosomes are utilized in an ex vivo whole blood assay to evaluate their immunomodulatory effects on samples from critically ill COVID-19 patients. The research focuses on the ability of MSC-exosomes to suppress the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and alter immune cell phenotypes, potentially offering a therapeutic strategy to mitigate the 'cytokine storm' associated with severe viral infections and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
