Mesenchymal stem cell-extracellular matrix (MSC-ECM) aggregates are an investigational cell therapy product developed by researchers at the Peking University Hospital of Stomatology. This therapeutic approach is designed to treat large segment bone defects in long bones, which often fail to heal through conventional methods. The technology involves the cultivation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a three-dimensional environment that encourages the cells to secrete and organize their own extracellular matrix, forming cohesive aggregates. Unlike traditional cell therapies that rely on dissociated cells or synthetic scaffolds, these aggregates preserve the natural cell-matrix microenvironment, which significantly enhances cell survival, retention, and osteogenic differentiation upon surgical implantation. The self-secreted ECM provides both structural support and essential biochemical cues that facilitate rapid bone regeneration and integration with the host tissue.
