This is a cell-free biologic therapy developed by Indonesia University (Universitas Indonesia) for the treatment of severe COVID-19. The therapy consists of the secretome harvested from hypoxia-conditioned mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) using a tangential flow filtration (TFF) strategy. This secretome contains a complex mixture of bioactive molecules, including anti-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β), as well as growth factors like Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF). The treatment is designed to mitigate the cytokine storm and systemic inflammation associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection through its immunomodulatory, anti-apoptotic, and pro-angiogenic properties. Clinical evaluation in a Phase 3 randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted in Indonesia demonstrated that the MSC secretome could effectively control inflammation with a favorable safety profile in hospitalized patients.
