Overview

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) secretome is an investigational cell-free biologic therapy being developed by Universitas Sebelas Maret in collaboration with Kalbe Farma for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Derived from the bioactive factors secreted by MSCs—typically umbilical cord-derived—the secretome contains a complex mixture of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles (including exosomes). It functions by modulating the immune system and exerting anti-inflammatory effects, offering a potentially safer and more standardized alternative to direct stem cell transplantation. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in reducing joint inflammation and disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
