Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by Cellonis Biotechnology are an autologous cell therapy derived from bone marrow, currently being investigated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and associated insulin resistance. The therapeutic protocol involves a multi-step administration process: an initial percutaneous transplantation via the pancreatic artery followed by two subsequent intravenous infusions. These MSCs are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through immunomodulation, reduction of systemic inflammation, and potential regeneration or support of pancreatic beta-cell function, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and glycemic control in patients.
