Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by Guangdong Women and Children Hospital are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment and prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. The therapy involves the intratracheal instillation of MSCs into the lungs of neonates requiring mechanical ventilation. MSCs are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling, secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that reduce lung inflammation and promote the repair and development of alveolar and vascular structures. This specific intervention is currently being studied in a Phase 1 clinical trial to assess its safety and preliminary efficacy in this vulnerable population.
