Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre are an investigational cell therapy designed to treat steroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). These cells are isolated from bone marrow and expanded ex vivo under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions. MSCs function as potent immunomodulators; they migrate to sites of inflammation and interact with various immune cells to suppress the overactive immune response seen in aGVHD. Their mechanism of action includes the inhibition of alloreactive T-cell proliferation and the induction of regulatory T-cells (Tregs), which helps restore immune homeostasis. This therapy is typically administered via intravenous infusion to patients who have failed first-line corticosteroid treatment.
