Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University for the treatment of refractory cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in patients following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). MSCs are multipotent stromal cells that possess significant immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair properties. In patients with CMV infections that are resistant to conventional antiviral medications, MSCs are utilized to modulate the immune response, potentially enhancing the recovery of CMV-specific T-cell immunity or reducing the systemic inflammatory environment that allows the virus to persist. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to determine its safety and efficacy in this high-risk patient population.
