Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being investigated by the National Institute of Blood and Marrow Transplant (NIBMT) in Pakistan for the treatment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). These cells possess unique immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, allowing them to home to sites of injury, such as the kidneys in diabetic patients. Once at the site, MSCs are thought to release various paracrine factors, including growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which help reduce renal inflammation, fibrosis, and oxidative stress. The primary goal of this therapy is to halt or reverse the progression of chronic kidney damage, thereby reducing the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and the need for renal replacement therapy.
