This investigational cell therapy involves donor-specific, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by the University Hospital Tuebingen for use in pediatric living-donor liver transplantation. The MSCs are harvested from the donor's iliac crest approximately four weeks before the transplant and expanded in a GMP-compliant facility using animal-free media. Administered via the intra-portal or intravenous route, the therapy aims to utilize the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs to promote allograft tolerance and reduce the requirement for high-dose calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) immunosuppression. By modulating the recipient's immune response, the treatment seeks to minimize CNI-related toxicities and prevent long-term graft inflammation and fibrosis in pediatric patients.
