This combination therapy involves the co-administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and umbilical cord blood (UCB). MSCs, which can be derived from various sources including the umbilical cord (UC-MSCs) or bone marrow (BM-MSCs), are utilized for their immunomodulatory properties and their ability to support the hematopoietic niche. Cord blood serves as a source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The rationale for combining these two cell types, particularly in the context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and bone marrow failure syndromes, is that MSCs can enhance the engraftment and proliferation of HSCs from cord blood while potentially reducing the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and graft failure through paracrine signaling and direct cell-cell interactions.
