Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mesenchymal stem cells + secretome refers to a combination therapy that utilizes both mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the collection of bioactive factors they secrete, known as the "secretome." MSCs are multipotent adult stem cells capable of differentiating into various cell types and are widely used in regenerative medicine. The MSC secretome is composed of soluble proteins (such as growth factors and cytokines), lipids, free nucleic acids, microvesicles, and exosomes. This combination therapy leverages both the direct regenerative potential of MSCs and the paracrine effects mediated by their secreted products. The mechanism of action involves: - Direct tissue regeneration via differentiation by MSCs. - Paracrine signaling from the secretome that modulates immune responses, reduces inflammation, promotes angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), inhibits apoptosis (cell death), supports autophagy modulation, and enhances tissue repair[1][2][4][7]. Therapeutically, this approach aims to overcome limitations associated with cell-based therapies alone—such as low engraftment rates or immunogenicity—by also harnessing potent bioactive molecules in the conditioned media or isolated vesicular fractions[1][2][3]. The combined use is being explored for a wide range of indications including chronic inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, ALS), cardiovascular diseases, osteoarthritis/arthritis conditions, spinal cord injuries, erectile dysfunction/impotence recovery after injury or surgery[3], retinal degenerative diseases[5], wound healing[8], among others.
