Mesenchymal stem cells derived from Wharton's jelly (WJ-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from the gelatinous connective tissue of the human umbilical cord. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell lineages (osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes) and their expression of specific surface markers, including CD73, CD90, and CD105, while lacking hematopoietic markers like CD34 and CD45. WJ-MSCs are highly valued in regenerative medicine due to their potent immunomodulatory properties, low immunogenicity (allowing for allogeneic use without HLA matching), and high proliferative capacity compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs. They exert therapeutic effects primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a wide array of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that promote tissue repair, angiogenesis, and anti-inflammatory responses. Clinical investigations cover a broad spectrum of indications, including cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, and neurological conditions.
