Mesenchymal stromal cell therapy (R.P. Herrmann) is an investigational cell-based biologic therapy developed by R.P. Herrmann at Royal Perth Hospital for the treatment of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The therapy consists of allogeneic, third-party, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) administered intravenously. These MSCs exert immunomodulatory effects by suppressing T-cell proliferation, inducing regulatory T-cells, and releasing various immunomodulatory factors to mitigate the inflammatory response associated with GVHD. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials as an adjunct to standard corticosteroid treatment for patients with newly diagnosed (de novo) grades 2-4 acute GVHD following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.
