Overview
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being evaluated by the Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital for the treatment of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD). MSCs possess unique immunomodulatory properties, allowing them to migrate to sites of inflammation and suppress the activity of various immune cells, including T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer cells, which are responsible for the pathogenesis of cGvHD. In clinical trials, these cells are typically administered intravenously as an adjunct to standard immunosuppressive regimens, such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, to improve response rates and reduce the severity of the disease in newly diagnosed or steroid-refractory patients. This specific MSC product is currently being evaluated in a Phase III randomized, open-label, multi-center study in Southern China.
