Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells that possess significant immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. In the context of the clinical program led by Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, these cells are being evaluated as an adjunctive therapy for newly diagnosed chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD). MSCs function by secreting various soluble factors and through direct cell-to-cell contact to inhibit the proliferation and function of effector T-cells and B-cells, while promoting the induction of regulatory T-cells (Tregs). This modulation helps to suppress the pathological immune response characteristic of cGvHD, potentially improving response rates when added to standard immunosuppressive regimens like corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors.
