Developed by University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, this experimental cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) for the treatment of perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS) in neonates. Administered intranasally via nose drops, these "off-the-shelf" cells are manufactured at UMC Utrecht's GMP-accredited Cell Therapy Facility from healthy human donors. The therapy leverages the neuroregenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs, which secrete growth factors and cytokines to stimulate endogenous brain repair processes and reduce tissue damage following a neonatal stroke. It is currently being evaluated in the Phase 1/2 PASSIoN trial.
