Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed at the Karolinska Institutet are an investigational cell-based biologic therapy derived from the bone marrow of healthy donors. These allogeneic cells are being evaluated for the treatment of steroid-refractory chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). The therapy works through complex immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the secretion of anti-inflammatory factors and direct interaction with immune cells to suppress aberrant immune responses. Clinical studies led by researchers such as Dr. Katarina Le Blanc have demonstrated safety and potential efficacy in patients who have failed standard immunosuppressive treatments, showing clinical responses in approximately half of the treated population.
