Overview

Mesna is a synthetic organosulfur compound used primarily as a cytoprotectant to reduce the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis (bladder inflammation and bleeding) caused by the chemotherapeutic agents ifosfamide and cyclophosphamide. It acts by binding to acrolein, a toxic metabolite produced during chemotherapy with these agents, neutralizing it through thiol addition and forming non-toxic compounds that are excreted in urine. This mechanism protects the urothelium without interfering with the antitumor efficacy of chemotherapy. Mesna also exhibits antioxidant properties that further protect urinary tract tissues from oxidative damage. In addition to its primary use in oncology as an adjunct for uroprotection during chemotherapy, mesna has been used as a mucolytic agent for respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis or obstructive pneumonia when administered via inhalation[1][2][5].
