Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meso-zeaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment and one of the three macular pigments (along with lutein and zeaxanthin) that accumulate in the central retina, where they are collectively known as macular pigment. Meso-zeaxanthin is not typically found in significant amounts in the diet but is formed directly in the retina from lutein by enzymatic conversion. It plays a key role in protecting retinal tissues by filtering blue light and acting as an antioxidant, which may help prevent or slow age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and support optimal visual performance. Meso-zeaxanthin has potent anti-inflammatory effects, including downregulation of inflammatory mediators such as NFκB, Il-1β, TNF-α, and VEGF-A. It is widely used as a dietary supplement for eye health[2][3][5][6].
