Overview

Mesobiliverdin IV alpha is a synthetic tetrapyrrole and bile pigment structurally related to biliverdin. It is produced from phycocyanobilin derived from cyanobacteria and has been studied primarily for its potential to enhance pancreatic islet yield and function during transplantation procedures. Mesobiliverdin IV alpha acts as a substrate for human NADPH biliverdin reductase (BLVRB), participating in heme catabolism by catalyzing the reduction of biliverdins. In preclinical studies, infusion of mesobiliverdin IXα into rat pancreata increased the yield and viability of functional islets capable of reversing insulin dysfunction in diabetic recipients. Its mechanism involves antioxidant activity through the generation of bilirubin and modulation of oxidative stress pathways[1][5][7]. The compound has shown promise as a protectant for pancreatic islets during allograft transplantation.
