Mesogen is developing an autologous engineered Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) cell patch for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapy involves isolating stem cells from a patient's bone marrow, which are then expanded and differentiated into RPE cells using a proprietary process. These cells are seeded onto an electrospun poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffold that is designed to dissolve over approximately three months. The completed tissue-engineered patch is surgically transplanted into the subretinal space to replace damaged RPE and restore or maintain retinal function. Because the therapy utilizes the patient's own cells, it is designed to avoid the need for long-term systemic immunosuppression and carries no risk of teratoma formation.
