Messenger RNA encoding human cytomegalovirus UL131A is a specific mRNA component of Moderna's cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine candidate, mRNA-1647. It encodes the UL131A protein, which is one of the five subunits (along with gH, gL, UL128, and UL130) that form the CMV pentameric complex. This complex is essential for the virus's ability to infect epithelial, endothelial, and myeloid cells. When delivered via lipid nanoparticles, the mRNA is translated by host cells to produce the UL131A protein, which, in conjunction with the other vaccine-encoded subunits, triggers the production of neutralizing antibodies. mRNA-1647 is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (CMVictory study) for the prevention of primary CMV infection in women of childbearing age to prevent congenital CMV transmission.
