Overview
Mesulfen is a small molecule drug classified as a dimethyl derivative of thianthrene. It has been used primarily as an anti-acne preparation and scabicide (acaricide/miticide), and also for the treatment of seborrhea and seborrheic eczema. Mesulfen acts as a parasiticide and antipruritic in skin disorders such as acne, scabies, and seborrhea. Its mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but it is believed to exert anti-inflammatory effects and may inhibit certain enzymes involved in inflammatory processes. Historically marketed for dermatological use (topical), it appears to have been withdrawn from the market[1][3][4][7].
