MET-X

MET-X is a broad-spectrum small molecule metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) inhibitor developed to combat antimicrobial resistance in serious Gram-negative bacterial infections. Originally part of the MBLI program at Antabio SAS and later Medivir, the program was outlicensed to Infex Therapeutics (formerly the AMR Centre) in 2017. MET-X is designed to restore the efficacy of carbapenem antibiotics against carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and other pathogens that produce MBL enzymes, such as NDM, VIM, and IMP. These enzymes degrade carbapenems, which are often the last line of defense against resistant infections. By inhibiting these enzymes, MET-X allows the co-administered beta-lactam antibiotic to reach its target and kill the bacteria. The drug received FDA Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) designation in January 2023 and is currently in early-stage clinical development for intravenous administration.
