Overview

meta-Chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) is a psychoactive drug of the phenylpiperazine class, originally developed in the late 1970s and used primarily in scientific research[1][2]. It acts as a non-selective serotonin receptor modulator, functioning as a partial agonist at the serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2C (5‑HT2C), and an antagonist at both the serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2B (5‑HT2B) and serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3 (5‑HT3)[5]. mCPP also acts as a releasing agent and reuptake inhibitor for serotonin, increasing synaptic levels of this neurotransmitter[8]. It is known to induce endocrine, neurological, and psychiatric effects in humans; its subjective effects are similar to those of amphetamines but with limited reinforcing properties[3][8]. Notably, it can trigger migraine attacks in susceptible individuals and has been used experimentally as a challenge agent for studying serotonergic function or anti-migraine drugs[8]. mCPP is also an active metabolite of trazodone, an antidepressant medication[7].
