Overview

Metakavir is a small molecule nucleoside analog prodrug, likely of entecavir, developed by Nanjing Chang'ao Pharmaceutical Technology for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It functions as a potent inhibitor of the HBV DNA polymerase (reverse transcriptase), an enzyme critical for the replication of the hepatitis B virus. By competing with natural nucleosides, metakavir terminates the elongation of the viral DNA chain, thereby reducing viral load in the blood. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials in China using an enteric-coated capsule formulation to assess its safety and antiviral efficacy in comparison to standard treatments like adefovir dipivoxil.
