Metallic gold microparticles (GMPs) are an investigational intra-articular therapy being developed primarily for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. These particles, typically sized between 20 and 40 micrometers, are injected directly into the joint space (synovium), often in a vehicle such as hyaluronic acid. While gold is chemically inert in bulk, these microparticles are thought to provide therapeutic relief through the slow, sustained release of gold ions. These ions are internalized by synovial macrophages and modulate the local immune environment by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β). This action leads to a reduction in chronic synovial inflammation and provides long-term analgesia, with clinical studies suggesting pain relief lasting up to two years. Research and development are primarily led by academic and clinical institutions in Denmark.
