Metapex is a premixed, silicone oil-based root canal filling material composed of calcium hydroxide and iodoform. It is widely used in pediatric dentistry for pulpectomy procedures in primary teeth and for apexification in permanent teeth with open apices. The calcium hydroxide component provides a high alkaline pH (approximately 12.5), which exerts a potent bactericidal effect and stimulates the formation of mineralized tissue. Iodoform is included to enhance the material's radiopacity and provide sustained antimicrobial activity. Metapex is designed to be resorbable, allowing it to be used in primary teeth where it can resorb at a rate similar to the physiological resorption of the tooth roots. October University for Modern Sciences and Arts is currently sponsoring a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of Metapex compared to Zinc Oxide Eugenol (ZOE) in treating dental caries in the primary molars of children.
