Metapristone is the primary active metabolite of mifepristone (RU-486), formed via hepatic metabolism. It exhibits biological activities similar to its parent compound, including antiprogestogenic and antiglucocorticoid effects. Preclinical studies suggest that metapristone may have potential as a chemopreventive agent against cancer metastasis, particularly in melanoma models, by interfering with cell adhesion through down-regulation of integrin α4 expression. In animal models, it has shown a safety and efficacy profile comparable to or better than mifepristone for certain indications[7].
