Overview

Metaraminol is a potent sympathomimetic amine and a substituted amphetamine used primarily for the prevention and treatment of hypotension (low blood pressure), especially as a complication of anesthesia or shock. It acts mainly as an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist with some indirect action by releasing norepinephrine from nerve terminals. At higher doses it may also have weak beta-adrenergic effects. Its main clinical use is to increase both systolic and diastolic blood pressure through peripheral vasoconstriction and increased cardiac contractility. Metaraminol is administered intravenously or intramuscularly for acute hypotensive states such as those due to hemorrhage, spinal anesthesia, medication reactions, surgical complications, or shock associated with brain injury. It can also be used in the management of priapism[1][3][5].
