Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MetControl (Generex Metformin Gum) is a medicinal chewing gum formulation of the biguanide **metformin**, developed by **Generex Biotechnology** in collaboration with **Fertin Pharma**. Designed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity, the product utilizes a buccal drug delivery system to provide systemic absorption of metformin through the oral mucosa. This delivery method is intended to bypass the gastrointestinal tract, thereby mitigating the common adverse GI side effects—such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea—that often limit the tolerability of traditional metformin tablets. Each piece of gum contains 214.5 mg of metformin. The product was originally positioned as a companion therapy to Generex's oral insulin spray, Oral-lyn, to improve patient compliance and glycemic control.
