Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curative Biotechnology is developing a reformulated topical eye drop version of metformin hydrochloride for the treatment of intermediate dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Geographic Atrophy (GA), and other retinal degenerations. Unlike oral metformin used for diabetes, this formulation is designed for ophthalmic administration to deliver the drug directly to the choroid, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and retina. The mechanism of action involves the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the modulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and calcium-related signaling pathways, which are thought to provide neuroprotective effects and reduce retinal degeneration. The development is supported by a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
