Metformin is a biguanide-class oral antihyperglycemic agent that serves as the first-line pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It primarily acts by inhibiting mitochondrial complex I in hepatocytes, which leads to an increase in the AMP/ATP ratio and the subsequent activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This activation results in the suppression of hepatic gluconeogenesis and an increase in peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. HKB0701 is a development code used by HK inno.N (formerly CJ CheilJedang) for an extended-release formulation of metformin hydrochloride. It has been evaluated in clinical trials both as a monotherapy and as a component of the fixed-dose combination product CJ-30001, which also contains the DPP-4 inhibitor sitagliptin (SLM0807).
